The goalkeeper was within minutes of returning to Spain in 2015 and Miguel Angel Gil Marin hopes interest is rekindled as his side would benefit
Atletico Madrid “would love” to see David de Gea join Real Madrid, according to chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin.
The goalkeeper has long been linked with a return to Madrid, having moved to Manchester United for a British record fee for a goalkeeper in 2011.
The Spain international was within minutes of moving to Real Madrid in 2015, only for a part-exchange deal with Keylor Navas to collapse as the transfer window ended and David De Gea signed a new contract at Old Trafford days later.
Now Real Madrid have been linked with interest in Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, another former Atletico player, but Marin hopes interest in De Gea in rekindled as the club would make money from any transfer.
“I would not feel bad if Madrid signed Courtois, but I would love to have De Gea sign up because we own five per cent of the [sell-on fee],” Marin told Onda Cero.
Marin elaborated on Atletico’s transfer business during the summer, insisting Real Madrid did not pursue Gimenez but did confirm interest in bringing Alvaro Morata to the Vicente Calderon.
He added: “Madrid never asked us about Jose Gimenez, we did ask ourselves this summer about Morata.”
