In inaugural ceremony of the two-day regional gaming expo in Sihanoukville, the Asia Gaming Expo representatives said that Cambodia would be a regional gaming and gambling hub soon.
It also noted that the country has already legalized both land-based and online gambling operations.
There are over 60 different gambling and casino establishments in the country. The Cambodian government has been issuing a license to gambling operators and so far, there have been 163 gambling licenses issued.
In its statement to the press, the AGE said that “Sihanoukville set to become Cambodia’s top casino hub and Chinese gaming operators are rapidly transforming it into the country’s leading casino hotspot.
“Cambodia has issued more than 80 casino licenses by the middle of this year, and Sihanoukville’s casino market is starting to rival that of Poipet and Bavet, which cater to customers who stream across the border from Thailand and Vietnam, respectively.”
Last week, 28 people were killed after a seven-storey building collapsed. It was an under construction casino resort owned by Chinese investors.
The number of construction works taken by Chinese-owned enterprises in the country has exploded in recent years.
Talking to Khmer Times, Ros Phearun, deputy director-general at the ministry’s financial industry department, said: “With this law, we hope that to attract more big casino investors and increase revenue from the industry. I think that as a result of this law, revenue collected from the industry will double.”
