Fosu-Mensah to sign new Man Utd deal

Manager Jose Mourinho is keen to keep the 18-year-old defender at Old Trafford and an announcement is now imminent after several weeks of protracted negotiations

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s new long-term Manchester United contract should be confirmed within the next week, Goal has learned.

Talks regarding a new deal have been held over the past couple of months and an agreement is now in place, with just minor details still to be ironed out.

It was reported in mid-August that an announcement was imminent, but negotiations have only advanced to that stage in recent weeks.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah broke into the United first-team reckoning under Louis van Gaal last season and Jose Mourinho is keen to keep him at the club.

Mourinho sent a number of young prospects out on loan when he arrived at Old Trafford in the summer but Fosu-Mensah was kept around and is now second-choice right-back behind Antonio Valencia, ahead of Italy international Matteo Darmian.

He has played 74 minutes against Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League and 55 minutes against Northampton in the EFL Cup so far this season.

The defender moved to United from Ajax in 2014 and had impressed at youth level before being called up to the senior side by Van Gaal and signing his first professional contract in August 2015.

The Dutch youth international, born to Ghanaian parents, made 10 appearances in the Premier League and FA Cup last season.
