Multimedia University (MMU), a premier digital tech university, has teamed up with local-based esports company, eSports Distinct International Network Gamers (ESDING), to boost Malaysian’s position in the esports industry.

This will be through developing facilities and exploring research and innovation activities of the virtual games.

The collaboration was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by MMU president, Prof Datuk Ts. Dr Ahmad Rafi Mohamed Eshaq and ESDING regional managing director, Afizal Amid at the MMU Cyberjaya campus recently.

Ahmad Rafi, in a statement today said MMU had outlined plans for esports to go beyond gaming or nurturing gamers and would prepare and develop esports champions and talents to compete at the international level.

“The university will explore research and innovation for game development, content creation, esports management and entrepreneurship,” he said.

Ahmad Rafi said the signing of the MoU represented a continuation of MMU being ahead of the ICT and gaming industries.

“This has led to MMU graduates becoming some of the most sought-after graduates in the country,” he added.

MMU offers gaming programme under the Bachelor of Computer Science in four areas of specialisation, namely Game Design Fundamentals, Game Production, Game Physics and Game Algorithm.

Meanwhile, Afizal who is also MMU pioneering alumnus, said the MoU would pave the way for both parties to explore esports seriously, from various needs and angles of the industry.

This will be the first amongst our other initiatives that we have in progress to systematically nurture healthy grassroots esports and to effectively groom talents for their easier pathway to becoming a paragon.

He said MMU would be a reliable university partner to initiate the company’s strategic plans for universities.

“Through deep integration with our existing frameworks, ESDING foresees mutual benefits even for others in the esports economy and community. This is our level of care for grassroots, our benchmark,” he added.

In 2018, the company organised the ESDING Elites Intervarsity eSports Championship (EEIEC), where EEIEC top players known as ESDING Elites had been invited to three major global tournaments in China and South Korea, with participants even from the United States, Germany and Canada.
