“This action shows just how seriously the NHS takes the threat of gambling addiction, even in young people, but we need to be clear – tackling mental ill health caused by addiction is everyone’s responsibility – especially those firms that directly contribute to the problem,” Stevens said.
“We will create a healthy society by implementing thoroughly measures based on the basic plan in order to prevent people from finding themselves in difficult situations,” said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga during a government meeting.
Of the 45,000 people who have enough of a gambling problem for it to be considered an addiction, almost two thirds of them (64 percent) are female, the country’s public health authority found.
“It is the intention of this code to strengthen consumer protection and ensure gambling does not evolve from entertainment to addiction,” the code states.
