Sundram: We went to sleep after taking lead

by new_c_admin

The reason Tampines Rovers lost to Home United on Friday was because they “went to sleep”, coach V. Sundramoorthy said after the game.

The Stags had taken a 22nd minute lead after Fazrul Nawaz opened the scoring with a well taken goal.

However, the lead lasted for just two minutes when the Stags allowed Azhar Sairudin to nod in the equaliser from a free-kick.

Home completed the turnaround when Ken Ilso latched onto a defence-splitting pass by Song Uiyong, before producing a fine finish to beat Izwan Mahbud and hand Tampines a 2-1 defeat.

“We did well to get the lead, and then we went to sleep. That was the turning point,” Sundram said.

“If we defended the lead better, and did not make errors by picking up players, we would still be 1-0 up and it probably would be a different game in the second half.

“We started well, only thing is we didn’t create enough chances. We had the possession, but we need chances to hit the target.

“If you don’t convert they will get chance and that’s what Ken and Faris Ramli did for Home united. Ken is always a dangerous man always when he’s around the box.”

Sundram also felt that the number of games his team had to play in a short span of time affected his side.

“Last 15 minutes, maybe fatigue played a part,” the Singapore legend said.

“We have squeezed many games, and it’s going to be tough. We had eight games last month, and now, we have three games in seven or eight days.

“But we need to recover and come back, what else can we say?

“Overall, a draw would be fair. Both teams had chances, but football is like that sometimes.

Sundram also took time out to praise Fazrul, who finally scored after going on a lengthy goal drought.

The striker hasn’t scored in 10 straight games, with his last goal coming in the AFC Cup match against Selangor FA at the start of March.

“I’m very happy for the boy. After going so long without a goal, the goal has lifted his spirit and confidence,” Sundram said.

“Football is like this nowadays, it’s all about the confidence. With this defeat we need to up the team’s confidence and be positive for the next game.”
