Tencent introduces an interesting hybrid with Nintendo

Tencent’s Pokémon Unite is like League of Legends with Pikachu for Nintendo Switch and smartphones

Pokemon UNITE may seem like a hybrid of classic pokemon games with current trending mobile oriented MOBA games. That’s because it is! Taking inspiration from the current gaming trend, Tencent have embarked on a interesting trial with Pokemon UNITE.

Pokémon Unite is a brand new five-on-five team battle game arriving on Nintendo Switch and smartphones. Crossplay is also supported between the two different devices! In Pokemon UNITE, players team up in multiplayer battles, each picking a Pokémon like Pikachu, Charmander or Snorlax. Then they venture out into an arena to battle wild Pokémon and capture territory from the opposing team — while defending their own from attack.

It may sound very familiar to alot of other MOBA games out there, amongst many other ones – DOTA 2, League of Legends, Mobile Legends, etc. It will be interesting to see how this unravels, as the current gaming spectacle seem to revolve around easy-to-digest mobile game like games. Maybe the introduction of a classical, familiar theme will be able to attract users to give it a shot!

“The Unite in Pokémon Unite represents the gameplay concept of players coming together with a shared goal,… Through our shared pursuit of innovative gameplay and quality, Tencent and The Pokémon Company have united with the goal of creating a new game that can be enjoyed by all.”

Steven Ma, senior vice president of Tencent
